What is an MCC

Motor Control Center (MCC) is an assembly of one or more enclosed sections containing motor control units (contactors, overload relays, circuit breakers, VFDs, soft starters).

Used in industrial plants to control motors (pumps, fans, compressors, conveyors, etc.).

Typical rating: 400V-690V, up to 5000A main bus, individual units up to 500kW.

MCC Types and Configurations

Fixed type: Motor control units are fixed in position. Cheaper, but requires shutdown for maintenance.

Withdrawable type: Motor control units can be withdrawn while energized. More expensive, but easier maintenance.

Intelligent MCC: With communication (Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP). Enables remote monitoring and control.

Motor Starting Methods

Direct-on-line (DOL): Simple, cheap, but high inrush current (6-8x rated current). For small motors (< 15kW).

Star-delta: Reduces starting current (to 1/3). For medium motors (15-100kW).

Soft starter: Ramp up voltage. Reduces mechanical stress. For medium motors (15-200kW).

VFD: Variable speed control. Energy savings for variable torque loads (pumps, fans). For all motor sizes.

Component Selection

Circuit breaker: For short-circuit protection. Rating: 1.5-2x motor rated current.

Contactor: For switching. Rating: AC-3 duty, 1.5-2x motor rated current.

Overload relay: For overload protection. Rating: 0.95-1.05x motor rated current.

VFD/Soft starter: For controlled starting or variable speed.

Maintenance Best Practices

1. Visual inspection: Check for dust, overheating, loose connections.

2. Infrared thermography: Detect hot spots (loose connections, overloaded circuits).

3. Cleaning: Remove dust and dirt (use vacuum, not compressed air).

4. Torque check: Check all electrical connections (annual).

5. Function test: Test control circuits and protection devices (annual).
