Compact Substation vs Traditional Substation: Cost and Timeline Comparison

Practical comparison of compact prefabricated substations and traditional civil substation buildings for industrial projects.

When compact substation makes sense

Compact substations integrate transformer, HV/LV switchgear, and metering in one enclosure. They suit industrial parks, mining sites, commercial buildings, and temporary power with space or schedule constraints.

Typical advantages: shorter delivery (4-8 weeks), less civil work, factory-tested, plug-and-play installation, and easier relocation.

When traditional substation is preferred

Traditional substations use separate buildings for transformer and switchgear rooms. They suit large capacity (above 2500kVA), long-term infrastructure, utility-owned projects, or sites needing frequent equipment access.

Considerations: longer delivery (3-6 months), more civil work, on-site installation coordination, but more flexible for future expansion.

How to decide in RFQ stage

Compare: total installed cost (equipment + civil + installation), project schedule, available land, future expansion plan, local utility requirements, and maintenance access.

Ask suppliers for both options with total cost breakdown. The cheapest equipment price may not mean lowest total project cost.
