Understanding the SYPD and SYXP product lines

SYPD and SYXP are two series of low voltage distribution boxes designed for final circuit distribution in commercial, industrial, and residential applications. The SYPD series generally covers standardized enclosure sizes with pre-configured busbar and mounting arrangements for common circuit quantities (4, 6, 8, 12, 18, 24, or 36 ways). The SYXP series offers expanded configurations with higher IP ratings, larger gland plate areas, and increased internal separation for mixed power and control wiring.

Both series are manufactured to IEC 61439-3 (distribution boards intended for operation by ordinary persons) and IEC 60529 (enclosure protection). The enclosures are fabricated from 1.2–1.5 mm cold-rolled steel sheet with electrostatic powder coating, or from stainless steel (304 or 316) for corrosive environments. Both indoor (IP30/IP40) and outdoor (IP54/IP65) variants are available.

Key differences between SYPD and SYXP

SYPD is optimized for standard commercial and light industrial applications: 400 V, up to 250 A incoming, with outgoing ways for MCBs, RCBOs, and MCCBs up to 125 A. The enclosure is typically 300–500 mm wide, 400–600 mm high, and 200–300 mm deep, making it suitable for installation in electrical cupboards, riser rooms, and plant areas. The standard IP rating is IP30 (indoor), with IP54 available on request.

SYXP is designed for more demanding applications where higher ingress protection, larger cable capacity, or mixed power/control/communication segregation is required. The enclosure is deeper (250–400 mm) to accommodate larger conductors and additional wiring space. SYXP models support incoming ratings up to 400 A and outgoing ways configured for MCCBs up to 250 A, fuse-switch units, and contactor modules. Typical IP ratings are IP54 (standard) and IP65 (optional).

Circuit configurations and internal layout

Standard SYPD configuration: copper busbar (rated for the incoming supply) runs across the top of the enclosure, with tap-off pins or comb busbar feeding each outgoing MCB/RCBO position. The neutral and earth busbars are mounted in a segregated compartment, sized for the total outgoing circuit capacity. The door is fitted with a lockable handle (padlockable in the OFF position per IEC 61439-3).

SYXP configuration: In addition to the standard busbar and MCB layout, SYXP provides an internal separation barrier between the busbar compartment and the wiring chamber. This allows cabling to be installed and maintained without exposure to live busbars. The larger enclosure also accommodates a sub-frame for mounting DIN-rail equipment (contactors, timers, meters, terminal blocks) alongside the distribution section.

Selection criteria for procurement

Circuit count and load type: Count the number of outgoing circuits and determine whether they are lighting (6 A / 10 A MCBs), general power (16 A / 20 A MCBs), or equipment circuits (32 A / 50 A MCCBs). Allow 20% spare ways for future expansion. For motor circuits, specify MCB type C or D curve to accommodate inrush current.

Incoming supply: Verify the supply voltage (single-phase 230 V or three-phase 400 V), the maximum fault level at the point of installation, and whether the incoming supply requires a main switch, an MCCB, or an RCD incomer. SYPD typically uses a rotary isolating switch for incoming control; SYXP can be specified with an MCCB incomer for higher short-circuit ratings.

Environmental conditions: For indoor installation in a clean electrical room, IP30 (SYPD) is sufficient. For installation in a plant area, warehouse, or covered outdoor location, specify IP54 (SYXP). For direct outdoor exposure, specify IP65 (SYXP) with a weatherproof gland plate and UV-stabilized enclosure.

Standards compliance and certification

SYPD and SYXP distribution boxes are manufactured to comply with IEC 61439-3 (low voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies — distribution boards). Key compliance requirements include: busbar temperature rise within limits, short-circuit withstand of busbar and outgoing terminals, clearance and creepage distances, protection against electric shock, and mechanical strength of the enclosure.

For projects requiring third-party certification, the factory can provide a test report or certificate from an accredited laboratory. CE marking is available on request. For projects in IEC 60364-based regulatory environments (most of Asia, Africa, Middle East, and Latin America), SYPD and SYXP enclosures meet the standard distribution board requirements. For UL/CSA jurisdictions, a separately listed enclosure may be required.

Q: Can SYPD distribution boxes be used for sub-metering? A: Yes. The busbar compartment has sufficient space for installing DIN-rail energy meters. Specify the meter type (single-phase or three-phase, direct-connected or CT-operated) and the enclosure depth required for the meter housing.

Q: What outgoing breaker types are compatible? A: Both SYPD and SYXP accept standard modular DIN-rail devices: MCBs (B, C, D curves), RCBOs, RCCBs, surge protective devices (SPDs), and miniature MCCBs up to 125 A.
