Circuit Breaker Types

MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker): 1-125A, for branch circuits. Thermal-magnetic trip.

MCCB (Molded Case Circuit Breaker): 16-1600A, for feeder circuits. Thermal-magnetic or electronic trip.

ACB (Air Circuit Breaker): 400-6300A, for main incomer. Electronic trip, many functions.

VCB (Vacuum Circuit Breaker): 630-4000A, 11kV-33kV. For medium voltage.

Sizing Criteria

1. Rated current (In): ≥ load current. For motor loads, In ≥ 1.25x motor rated current.

2. Breaking capacity (Icu): ≥ fault current at installation point. Typically 25kA, 36kA, 50kA, 65kA, 85kA.

3. Tripping setting: Adjustable (for MCCB/ACB). Set based on load profile and coordination.

4. Number of poles: 1P, 2P, 3P, 4P. 3P for 3-phase, 4P for 3-phase + neutral.

IEC 60947 Standards

IEC 60947-1: General rules.

IEC 60947-2: Circuit breakers.

IEC 60947-3: Switches, disconnectors, switch-disconnectors.

IEC 60947-4: Contactors and motor-starters.

Compliance ensures safety, performance, and international acceptance.

Selection Checklist

✅ Rated current (In) matches load.

✅ Breaking capacity (Icu) > fault current.

✅ Tripping characteristics match load (type B, C, D for MCB).

✅ Number of poles correct (3P or 4P).

✅ Auxiliary contacts (alarm, status) if needed.

✅ Communication (Modbus, Profibus) if needed (for ACB/MCCB).

✅ Certification: IEC 60947-2, CCC, KEMA, ASTA.

Common Selection Mistakes

1. Undersized breaking capacity (breaker explodes during fault).

2. Wrong tripping curve (nuisance tripping or no trip).

3. Not considering ambient temperature (breaker derated).

4. Ignoring coordination (selective tripping fails).

5. Buying cheap, non-certified breakers (safety risk).
