What is a Smart Meter

Smart meter = Electronic meter + Communication module. Measures energy (kWh), power (kW), voltage, current, power factor. Transmits data remotely.

vs Traditional meter: Traditional meter only measures energy, requires manual reading. Smart meter provides real-time data, remote reading, demand response.

AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure)

AMI = Smart meters + Communication network + Meter data management system (MDMS).

Functions: Automated meter reading (AMR), remote connect/disconnect, prepayment, demand response, outage management, tamper detection.

Communication Technologies

Wired: PLC (Power Line Communication), RS-485, Ethernet. Reliable but expensive (cabling).

Selection: Depends on distance, data volume, power consumption, cost. NB-IoT and LoRaWAN popular for IoT applications.

Smart Meter Selection

1. Accuracy class: Class 1 (1% error) or Class 0.5S (0.5% error) for industrial use.

2. Communication: Choose compatible technology (match AMI system).

3. Functions: Energy measurement (kWh), demand measurement (kW), power quality (voltage, current, power factor), event logging.

4. Certification: IEC 62052-11, IEC 62053-21/22/23.

5. Brand: Siemens, Schneider, ABB, Landis+Gyr, Itron, or reputable Chinese brands (Haixing, Holley).

Implementation Considerations

1. Cost: Smart meter $50-200, AMI system $10-50 per meter (communication + MDMS).
