IEC 60309 Industrial Plugs and Sockets

IEC 60309 is the international standard for industrial plugs and sockets. Replaces older national standards (e.g., BS 4343, CEE 17).

Features: Color-coded by voltage (yellow: 110V, blue: 230V, red: 400V), pin configuration prevents wrong connection, IP44 or IP67 rated.

Applications: Construction sites, marinas, outdoor events, industrial plants, data centers.

Pin Configurations and Voltage

2P+E (2 poles + earth): For single-phase (230V).

3P (3 poles): For 3-phase, no neutral (400V).

3P+E (3 poles + earth): For 3-phase, no neutral (400V).

3P+N+E (3 poles + neutral + earth): For 3-phase with neutral (400V/230V).

Clock position: Prevents wrong voltage connection (e.g., 6h for 230V, 9h for 400V).

IP Ratings

IP44: Splash-proof. For indoor or covered outdoor use.

IP67: Watertight (1m depth for 30 minutes). For outdoor use, wet environments.

Selection: IP44 for indoor, IP67 for outdoor or wash-down areas.

Current Ratings

16A: Most common, for small equipment (tools, lighting).

32A: For medium equipment (small machines, compressors).

63A: For large equipment (welding machines, large motors).

125A: For temporary power distribution (construction sites, events).

Selection: Based on equipment current rating. Add 20-30% margin.

Selection and Installation Tips

1. Match voltage and current rating (check equipment nameplate).

2. Choose correct pin configuration (prevents wrong connection).

3. Select IP rating based on environment (IP67 for outdoor).

4. Use angled plugs/sockets for space-constrained areas.

5. Ensure proper grounding (critical for safety).

6. Test before use (check continuity, insulation resistance).
